Toy Sorting for KidsOut
A small, but we like to think, distinguished, team arrived on a chilly, sunny morning to assist in the KidsOut warehouse. The job was to sort the mountain of toys raised through the KidsOut Giving Tree appeal. The amazing results of the appeal meant that KidsOut were able to provide a record number of children with toy boxes. You can find out more about here
The task on the day was to sort the toys into age categories to help the volunteer packers when it comes to making up toy boxes for individual children, the cold warehouse was an incentive to sort quickly which kept us warm and we made a small but satisfying dent in the mountain. They are always looking for more volunteers call 01525 385 252. Our team could only spare a couple of hours but it made a difference and so could you. More information about our nominated charity can be found further down the page.
Our Charity for 2015/2016
LB Connect celebrated record contributions to last year’s nominated charity, Kids In Action, with a final cheque for £4,140.
This year we are delighted to be supporting Leighton Buzzard based charity KidsOut and we got off to a great start by sending a team to their Quiz at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Football Club. Plans for lot more activities are afoot and we will be very busy in our endeavours to top last year’s total.
Gordon Moulds CBE, Chairman of KidsOut, attended our regular breakfast meeting to give us some background and information about KidsOut and the work they do.
KidsOut call themselves the Fun and Happiness charity. One of their key focuses is to reach children who, through domestic violence and abuse, find themselves in a Women’s Refuge. On average each year over 20,000 children flee domestic violence and seek sanctuary in a Women’s Aid Refuge. KidsOut provides new toys and a fun day out for the children, most of whom arrive at the Refuge with nothing other than the clothes on their back.
Every year, over 8,000 of these children will eventually be relocated to a new home in an unfamiliar area and KidsOut provides them with a box of brand new toys to help bring stability and fun into their lives when they need it most.
Another key focus is to provide fun days out for disadvantaged children in whatever form that takes. KidsOut in partnership with Rotary takes up to 25,000 disadvantaged children on a Day Out to attractions across the UK and this year will mark their 25th anniversary.
The first Rotary KidsOut Day Out took place 25 years ago on 13th June 1990 on a much smaller scale compared with today. The first day out in 1990 was organised by Kingston Rotary Club and Littlewoods organisation as a trial day out. The event proved to be very successful and the rollout soon began across the UK.

Our Charity for 2015
LB Connect are very happy to announce their nominated charity for the next 12 months is Kids In Action.
Kids in Action began in Dunstable in 1996 with the simple aim of providing social and sporting opportunities for children with special needs and disabilities (for whom there was very little on offer).
18 years and many hundreds of activities, parties, trips and holidays later, the Charity has just opened its own 9,000 sq ft centre on the Apex Business Centre in Dunstable. “The Base” provides a 40 seater coffee shop, a main hall and dance floor, a sensory cottage, soft play area, games consoles, pool table, air hockey etc. as well as a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
Kids in Action offer a Saturday Club for children and young people and a Monday Night Club for over 18s. It runs holiday clubs during school holidays and has caravans at Caister in Norfolk for families to enjoy an affordable holiday together. Phase 2 of the development is to add a multi-media room with musical and interactive equipment to especially help children with communications skills to express themselves in different ways and gain confidence and new skills. With such a brilliant facility, and so much space, the charity is keen to welcome new members and families to enjoy what they have to offer at The Base.
Kids in Action is also delighted to be one of just four charities in the region to be selected as partners in Global/Heart Radio’s ‘Make Some Noise’ children’s charity launch.
Families are eager to share what a difference Kids in Action makes to them and their children. One of the children, Abbey, has this to say:
“Saturdays used to be really boring; then my Mum found about Kids in Action … …It’s awesome. I didn’t have friends at school because I am different. I have friends at Kids in Action and I love coming to meet my friends there on Saturdays and at the holiday clubs and parties”
As a small charity, they are also keen to recruit reliable volunteers and always welcome support for what they do.
Kids in Action is for the whole family and parents can bring children with special needs together with their siblings. If you know families who would benefit (including your own!) please ask them to ring Kids in Action today!
